When you adopt a child in Florida, you will assume legal responsibility for the child and will be listed on his or her birth certificate as a parent. \u00a0You will also have the right to give your surname to the child.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, relative and\/or step-parent adoptions can provide these children with financial and legal protections that may otherwise not be available to them &#8212; such as medical insurance coverage or entitlement to certain benefits like Social Security disability benefits from a parent, for example.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida stepparent and relative adoptions also protect the child and the family unit if something bad happens. \u00a0Although we don&#8217;t like to think about the worst, it is important to be prepared anyway. When a child is adopted into his or her family, and should something catastrophic happen, it will keep the child from being removed from a &#8220;non-parent&#8217;s&#8221; care.
