What is MISMO?
MISMO® is the standards development body for the mortgage industry. MISMO developed a common language for exchanging information for the mortgage finance industry. Today, MISMO standards are accepted and deployed by every type of entity involved in creating mortgages, and they are required by most regulators, housing agencies and the GSEs that participate in the industry. Use of MISMO’s standards has been found to lower per loan costs, improve margins, reduce errors and speed up the loan process by reducing manual, paper-based processes while creating cost savings for the consumer. MISMO is a subsidiary of the Mortgage Bankers Association. MISMO stands for Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization.
MISMO standards are grounded in an open process to develop, promote and maintain voluntary consensus-based standards that allow participants in the mortgage industry such as mortgage lenders, investors in real estate and mortgages, servicers, industry vendors, borrowers and other parties to exchange information and more securely, efficiently and economically.
MISMO has issued guidelines and best practices for Remote Online Notarization of real-estate documents, and Florida Document Specialists supports those recommendations.
What specifically does MISMO certification and compliance have to do with remote online notarization (RON)?
MISMO created RON standards to promote consistency across mortgage industry practices and state regulations to allow the use of audio-visual communication devices to notarize documents in a virtual online environment. The RON standards have been thoroughly reviewed by a wide range of organizations and industry participants, and are ready for broad use across the entire residential mortgage industry.
In the interest of furthering adoption of RON and to encourage consistency in related state regulation, the standards are free to the public and do not require a license fee to use them. The standards include credential analysis, borrower identification, capturing and maintaining a recording of the notary process electronically, audio and video requirements, record storage, and audit trails.
